How to boot into Safe Mode with Windows 10

This article will show you three similar methods for how to boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10.

Each method will require some navigation, so be careful what you select.

From Start Menu

Step 01: Open the “Start Menu”

Step 02: Select the “Power” button

Step 03: Hold “Shift” and click “Restart”

This will take you to a special menu with a few options. You can use the arrow keys or the cursor to navigate.

Step 04: Select “Troubleshoot”

Step 05: Select “Advanced options”

Step 06: Choose “Start-up Settings” and then “Restart”

Your computer will restart into another menu screen with various startup options.

Using number keys or function keys you can choose from three different types of Safe Mode.

Step 07: Choose a type of Safe Mode:

  • Press “4” or “F4” for regular Safe Mode
  • Press “5” or “F5” for Safe Mode with Networking
  • Press “6” or “F6” for Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Your computer will now reboot into Safe Mode. If you have a password you will need to type it in.

As with the Start Menu option above, if you hold “Shift” while clicking “Restart” and if it appears click “Restart Anyway”, you should then be able to repeat the same steps.

From Windows Settings

Step 01: Open Windows Settings

Open the “Start Menu” and click “Settings” (indicated by the cog symbol) on the left hand side. Or use the shortcut keys Windows + I.

Step 02: Select “Update & Security”

Step 03: Select “Recovery”

Step 04: Click “Restart now” under “Advanced start-up”

This will take you into a special menu with a few options. You can use the arrow keys or the cursor to navigate.

Step 05: Select “Troubleshoot”

Step 06: Select “Advanced options”

Step 07: Choose “Start-up Settings” and then “Restart”

Your computer will restart into another menu screen with various startup options.
